MY VISION FOR HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

Having a thriving, vibrant downtown is absolutely essential to the success of any city, and Pocatello is no exception. Over the past several months, I’ve spent a great deal of time walking our Old Town District. I’ve talked with business owners, neighbors, and families. And each time I visit, I’m reminded of something powerful: the potential here is extraordinary.

There are small cities across America that have reimagined their downtowns and transformed them into economic, cultural, and community hubs. We can do the same. I see a future for downtown Pocatello that is creative, welcoming, and alive with energy; a place where people gather, celebrate, and share in the spirit of our community.

That’s why I’m excited to share a bold vision: I propose permanently closing two to three city blocks along Main Street to vehicle traffic, transforming that space into a pedestrian-focused destination. This means eliminating all vehicle traffic in that area—so you won’t have to worry about being hit by a car while you’re enjoying a meal, listening to music, or simply taking a stroll downtown. Traffic will be thoughtfully redirected around the plaza, ensuring access while prioritizing safety and experience.

Imagine a beautifully redesigned street where families stroll safely, where curbside cafes and local businesses spill into open plazas. Picture fountains, trees, park benches, vibrant landscaping, and storefronts that invite you to linger.

This new heart of our city would be a hub for local entertainment, street performers, musicians, vendors, festivals, and community events. It would not only support our local economy but foster a sense of pride and belonging for everyone who calls Pocatello home.

This is more than a beautification project, it's a commitment to the future. I believe this plan will change the face of our city forever, and I invite you to be a part of shaping it. I want to hear your thoughts, your hopes, and your ideas. Below, I’ve included some images that inspired this vision, and I hope they inspire you too.

RELOCATING CITY HALL TO DOWNTOWN

I’m committed to revitalizing the heart of our city by making strategic, forward-thinking decisions that drive economic growth and community pride. That’s why I support relocating Pocatello’s City Hall to our historic downtown district.

Moving City Hall downtown is more than just a change of address, it’s an investment in our future. Each day, thousands of people - city employees, residents conducting business, contractors, and visitors will have a reason to walk, shop, eat, and spend time downtown.

That daily foot traffic is exactly what our small businesses need to thrive. Coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, and service providers will see more customers. Vacant buildings will become attractive to new investors. And as more people frequent the area, safety improves and the sense of community deepens.

This move sends a clear message: downtown Pocatello is open for business. By bringing the core of our city’s operations into the center of our historic and cultural district, we ignite a ripple effect; one that increases property values, drives entrepreneurship, and helps local businesses grow organically through increased exposure and steady traffic.

Re-centering civic life downtown is a powerful tool for economic development, and it’s a bold step I’m ready to lead. Together, we can energize our downtown, build a more vibrant economy, and make Pocatello a city where progress and heritage go hand in hand.

I ask for your support on this journey. Let’s move forward together, because the best days of Pocatello are still ahead.  Vote Greg Cates for Mayor of Pocatello - November 4th 2025
